When people think about getting a pet for their child, or their first pet as an adult, small animals like guinea pigs, hamsters, rats, and rabbits are often suggested as ‘starter pets.’ They’re small, they don’t take up much space, and from the outside, they might look easy to care for.
But here’s the truth: there is no such thing as a starter pet. Every animal, no matter how small, deserves the same commitment, care, and love.
Where the ‘Starter Pet’ Myth Comes From
- Size = simplicity. People assume that because an animal is small, they must be easier to care for.
- Shorter lifespan. Some think that a pet who only lives a few years is less of a commitment.
- Misinformation. Pet shops often market small animals as ‘easy pets’ to encourage sales.
The problem with this thinking is that it devalues these animals’ lives and sets new owners up for disappointment or neglect when the reality doesn’t match the myth.
Why Small Pets Deserve More Credit
1. They Have Complex Needs
- Rats and guinea pigs need daily social interaction and enrichment.
- Rabbits need large, safe spaces to run and jump.
- Hamsters need carefully designed enclosures to meet their natural behaviours.
These needs take time, effort, and thought to meet properly.
2. They Can Be Expensive to Care For
Vet care, high-quality food, spacious housing, enrichment toys, and bedding all add up. Just because the animal is small doesn’t mean the costs are.
On top of that, small pets are prone to a range of health issues — from respiratory problems in rats to dental disease in guinea pigs. These conditions can mean multiple vet visits, ongoing treatments, and sometimes surgery.
From my own experience: one of my guinea pigs developed dental issues that took five months — and thousands of pounds — of treatment to get him back to normal. It was exhausting and expensive, but he was worth every penny.
3. They Form Deep Bonds
Small pets are capable of incredible trust and affection. Rats can learn their names and come when called. Guinea pigs will wheek with joy when they hear you. Rabbits form strong, lifelong pair bonds. These are not ‘practice’ animals — they’re companions in their own right.
4. Their Lives Are Short, But Their Impact Is Huge
Yes, many small animals have shorter lifespans, but that doesn’t make their lives any less valuable. In their short time with us, they give us love, joy, and lessons that we carry with us forever.
My Perspective
I’ve shared my life with small animals for years, and I can say with certainty that they are not ‘easy pets.’ They require commitment, patience, and a willingness to keep learning.
I also know how rewarding it is when a nervous guinea pig finally takes food from your hand, or when your rat climbs onto your shoulder just to sit with you. These are moments of trust, and they show just how meaningful the bond with a small pet can be.
What to Do Instead
If you or someone you know is thinking about a pet:
- Don’t choose a small animal because they seem ‘easier.’
- Do your research before bringing them home.
- Be honest about the time, cost, and care you can provide.
And remember: there’s no such thing as a ‘starter pet.’ There are only pets who deserve to be loved and respected as individuals.
Final Thoughts
Calling small animals ‘starter pets’ does them a disservice. They are not practice runs — they are real pets, with real needs, who form real bonds with us.
If you give them the care and respect they deserve, you’ll discover that small pets are some of the most incredible companions you could ever hope for.
